How GPA is built

Each letter grade maps to a grade-point value. Multiply that by the course's credit hours to get quality points, add the quality points across all courses, and divide by the total credits. Credit weighting is why a full-year course moves a GPA more than a half-credit elective with the same grade.

GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits

Weighted versus unweighted

An unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 and treats every course alike. A weighted GPA adds a bonus to harder courses — commonly +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB — so it can exceed 4.0. Most colleges recalculate applicants onto their own scale anyway, so the weighted figure your school reports is rarely the one used for admission.

The bonus applies only to passing grades here. An F is worth zero points whatever the course level, which is the usual convention.

Schools differ, and it matters

Some schools give A+ a 4.3, some do not distinguish it from an A. Some exclude electives, physical education or pass/fail courses from the calculation entirely. Some weight only the core subjects. This calculator uses the most common conventions, but your transcript is the authority — use this to check the arithmetic, not to predict what will be printed.
